Here’s a band from the southernmost part of the India that has been bringing happiness and joy through its music. With a catchy name, When Chai Met Toast (WCMT) has been churning some equally catchy numbers, thereby garnering a huge fan following from across the country.
The band describes its music as ‘happy’ and consists of four well-equipped musicians who met through the internal music scene of Cochin in Kerala. With Ashwin Gopakumar as the frontman, who also helps out with the guitars, Achyuth Jaigopal as the banjo and guitar player, Pai Sailesh as the drummer and Palee Francis as the man behind the keys and also the producer for the band, WCMT brings in all the right flavours to make listeners smile and tap along with the music.
With a generous sprinkling of Malayalam, Hindi and English lines, WCMT’s songs are a delight to listen to.
While having a candid interview with VibesMojo, the band exploded with its natural attitude. Guitar and banjo player Jaigopal said: “All of our songs sort of talk about experiences that we have gone through and some of those experiences are conveyed as songs.” No wonder, its popular number, Khoj — a song that talks about life — has been played over a million times on Spotify and has garnered over 8 lakh views on YouTube.
With its carefree attitude, the band pens down its lyrics with honesty and by keeping it real. The listeners can relate to each and every line of the songs. The fans’ reactions to the band’s songs on YouTube say it all about how they make their day.
On being asked about the different languages that they use in the lyrics, Gopakumar said that it’s not something that is ‘forced’. Only when we want to connect with people or try to tell them what we exactly mean by the song, we use languages like Malayalam or Hindi, it explained.
The band is now working on its debut album and is looking forward to release it by the month of April or May next year. With its new music coming up, the band is touring the entire country with its music and also at the same time inspiring people with its happy music.
