Two years after its inception, Shillong-based independent artiste collective and label, Movement Of Expression — popularly abbreviated as MOX — held its first official roster showcase at one of Northeast India’s premier performance and live music venue, The Evening Club in Hotel Eee Cee, Shillong, on August 10.
Performing in a packed venue was a roster of hip hop artists celebrating the diversity of Northeast India through rhythm and poetry. The line-up included Nepali-English rapper cum producer Nep zone, the torch-bearer of the ‘NepHop’ movement in Northeast India; aspiring medical student and Assamese-English rapper Shank Jay; and Banrap Lyngdoh — a household name in the Shillong hip hop scene and an active member of Quaver Choir. The idea of this collective was conceived by MOKSH, maker of the YouTube hit Azli Hai. The multi-lingual rapper’s discography includes a track for an award-winning web series, an internationally acclaimed EP titled, Twenty One.

Prior to the event, in order to announce the launch, all the artistes from the roster had put forward a four-minute track, the MOX Cypher, where the beat switches after every 16 bar. The cypher has four MCs, five languages (Hindi, English, Assamese, Khasi, and Nepali) and two producers. This was a first of its kind from the Indian hip hop fraternity.
The roster also consists of Aizawl-based producer/singer/songwriter Yugi Beats and 19-year-old Shillong-based producer/singer AS Prod.
MOX, pronounced as (M. O. X), is a first of its kind in Northeast India. The collective will now be operating as a label which is dedicated to working with hip-hop artists, producers, singers, songwriters, and visual artists.
