Assam is known as the land of tea and for being an avid tea-drinking population, so it’s no surprise that Guwahati is full of amazing tea shops, cafes and bars to while away the hours in. So many in fact, that it was pretty hard for us to choose six of our favourites. But nevertheless, we have created a list of our top spots for a cuppa:
The Tea Story, Uzan Bazar
The Tea Story offers a fascinating tea experience for an extremely affordable price. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned tea-drinker, everyone is welcome here as the staff is incredibly well-trained and are on-hand to provide information about the variety of teas available. Their range of floral and herbal teas is impressive, and are all sourced directly from tea growers; they pride themselves on having excellent relationships with the farms they work with. Our personal favourites are Honey-Ginger-Lemon, Rose, Bluepea, and Chamomile. Not only is the tea fantastic, but the space is equally as amazing. If you’re romantic, you may like a seat in the outdoor area, surrounded by trees and decorated with fairy lights.
The GTAC Tea Lounge, AIDC
The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC)’s tea lounge called ‘Chai Bar’ offers a wide range of teas such as Assam Orthodox, Crush Tear Curl (CTC) second flush, speciality teas, autumnal and more. The well-lit lounge flaunts a classy ambience and has facilities such as free Wi-Fi, books on tea and tourism, gift hampers, and most importantly free parking! When there, do try out their best-selling Yellow Tea, White Tea, Oolong Tea, Purple Tea, and Silver Needles Tea. You may pair it with piping hot Aloo-Matar Samosa or Chicken Cutlet.
Just Tea by Aromica, Panjabari
This Instagrammable chai house makes for great feeds, but serves even tastier tea! The tea selection is large, showcasing the usual suspects as well as some more unusual offerings for the more adventurous. The laidback, cutesy ambience offers a less formal tea-drinking experience – great for whiling away weekend afternoons. We absolutely love their Blooming Tea, Bamboo Shoot Tea, Bhoot Jolokia Tea, Bluepea Tea, and White Tea!
Chai Time, Zoo Road
A popular chai spot amongst students and artists community, Chai Time sports a popular range of teas such as Lemon Chai, Honey-Ginger-Lemon, Elaichi Chai, Adrak Chai, Masala Chai and more. To go with your teas the menu features an array of savouries. Munch on Peri Peri Toast, Corn and Cheese Maggi, Bun Maska, Maggi Cheese Sandwich, and Veggie Tikki Cheesy Grilled Burger. They have recently introduced a winter menu and it has all kinds of Tikkis and Chaats. Evenings are crowded for its lovely outdoor ambience. After all who doesn’t fancy a cup of tea under the stars?
Bhuruka Fresh Food
Owned by mother-son duo, Bhuruka has been winning hearts since its inception. It is a small tea shop serving an array of tea varieties such as Ginger Tea, Cinnamon Tea, Chocolate Tea, Mint Tea and more. However our personal favourites are Woodapple Tea, Bhuruka Special Tea, and Jaggery Tea. Team up your favourite brew with their homemade selection of Choco Tekeli Pitha, Choco Mahura Pitha, and Bhuruka Special Narikol Laru.
Aruj – The Tea Bar, Ganeshguri
This tiny café is a hidden gem for chai lovers. Cosy and warm with a seating capacity of eight, they serve teas from their tea brand – Aruj. Their regular Masala Chai, Assam Orthodox and Darjeeling Green Tea are crowd pleasers. But if you’re experiential, go for their Purple, Bluepea, White, and Rose teas. They also serve special home-made moist teacakes and crunchy cookies.
