Xiaomi India launched its first workshop on smartphone photography at St Edmund’s College in Shillong on Monday. The programme held in the capital of Meghalaya was part of a series of such events that the smartphone brand has planned for Northeast India to inspire budding and young aspirants in the field of photography.

Several students took part in the one-day workshop in Shillong.

While addressing the participants, Rajesh Dutta, special jury of the contest, said, “There is a huge platform for young ones to showcase their talents. Photography is now a medium which requires just a smartphone in your hand. They just need guidance to achieve that and also know where or which are the platforms to showcase their talent. I’m sure with a little bit of practice and tutoring they can have a huge fan base. We encourage the youth to move down this path and keep oneself busy with things that are interesting and creative.”

Dioneas War, a photographer who was also the mentor at the workshop, said, “Old phones don’t have the technology that we have today. Not everyone can afford an expensive DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex), but today many can afford a smartphone and be able to fulfill their dreams. Budding photographers can learn more about photography using their smartphones because they don’t need a high-end DSLR to learn photography.”

Meanwhile, Dahun Kharsyntiew, a photographer and another mentor of the workshop, said “This trend of clicking pictures using your smartphones is hype right now. You can even find Instagram pages with loads of pictures taken only with the help of a smartphone. And what’s more appalling is that you won’t even be able to differentiate, it is as good as a DSLR.”

The workshop was also part of an initiative to promote Xiaomi India’s smartphone photography contest called ‘Supershot’ aimed its Northeastern users. Inspired by the Redmi K20 series, ‘Supershot’ promises to provide an opportunity for shutterbugs from the region to communicate visually and bring on different perspectives through the use of only smartphones.

All that users have to do is to click a photo with their Mi smartphone, share it with #MiSuperShot #ShotOnMi or #ShotOnRedmi on Instagram and get a chance to get featured in the Mi 2020 Calendar. Contest closes on Sept 29, 2019.
