‘Hamro Sikkim’ a love ballad for the Himalayan state

Sikkim is a land of picturesque landscapes, misty hills, snow-capped mountain peaks, delectable Phaale and much more. A land which is part of Northeastern India, bordering Tibet in the north and the northeast, Bhutan in the east, Nepal in the west and West Bengal in the south needs no introduction about its incandescent beauty.

However, this beauty gets increased ten-fold when a song glorifying the diverse culture, tradition, peace, and beauty of the state is released. The song Hamro Sikkim brought out by the musical brothers Shivraj Shivakoti and Santosh Shivakoti is nothing less than a ballad of love for their state. A state that gave them so much right from their birth needs a special introduction of its own in a form they know the best; i.e. through a song.

The song is the culmination of labour of love of almost ten years.  “The song was first recorded in 2010. Then  we went visiting all the four cardinal directions of the state to gather the visuals. It took us 10 years to put the video together,” said Shivraj.

From the snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga to Buddha Park of Ravangla; from the Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary to the bustling streets of Namchi Bazar and also the green carpets of TEMI tea gardens, the video is a treat to eyes and ears alike as it takes us through a journey of the Himalayan state.

“The core tenet of the video is to showcase the people all over, the peace, unity, and harmony of Sikkim in the midst of diversity,” added Shivraj.

Buddhist monasteries like that of Old Rumtek Monastery, educational institutions like Sikkim Law College, etc. the song meanders through the soul of everyone who watches, rightfully complimenting the river Teesta as it flows through the state.

“Looking at the kind of feedback that we got after we released this song was a booster to us as well,” said Santosh. He further added, “We were getting continuous messages in our social media handles from people all around the globe describing what the song meant for them.”

The duo now plans to make another music video and this time about the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling. The Shivakoti brothers are also working on another project ‘Mashum Jindagi’ that will focus on creating awareness against rape.

Though ‘Hamro Sikkim’ was completely a personal investment,  they do wish that the government also does its bit, rallies behind people who are trying their best to give Sikkim the attention it deserves and as the lyrics goes: — We all live together, We all share our feelings, Our heart our love Sikkim…
