Coincidence or plain copycat? Makers of ‘Bala’ & ‘Ujda Chaman’ battle it out

The weird thing about coincidences is that even though the events or circumstances feel similar it is not. Hence the term coincidence. However, it is very hard to use the word coincidence in a case where the plot of the two movies is almost alike.

Such is the case of two Bollywood movies — Ujda Chaman directed by Abhisekh Pathak and Bala directed by Amar Kaushik. Add to the fact that both of the movies are yet to be released. The eerily similar plot lines were discovered just with the help of the trailers of both the movies. Have a look at both the trailers here:

Both Ujda Chaman and Bala follow the life of a man dealing with premature balding, each looking for his partner in life. In both the movies, the protagonist is a teacher or professor of sorts and let’s not forget about the similar movie posters as well. If this is a coincidence then the entire definition of coincidence needs to be modified.

According to the director of Ujda Chaman, the movie is a remake of the 2017 Kannada movie Ondu Motteya Kathe and stars Sunny Singh as the lead character. The movie is set to release on November 8 and the Ayushmann Khurrana starring movie Bala was set to release on October 15. However, after all the fiasco of similar plotlines, the movie release date of Bala was brought up to November 7, a day before the release of Ujda Chaman. “It is unethical on Dinesh’s part to advance the release so that the film can release a day before our offering,” Pathak told Mid-Day. “Are they scared of my film when they have a big star like Ayushmann Khurrana? While I think they have an upper hand, it appears that they feel they are on shaky ground and hence, are resorting to such things” adds the director.

It is reported that the Pathak has also initiated legal action against the makers of Bala. He says he knew about the making of Bala and hence was even given prior notice. But after the assurance by Maddock Films (Production Company of Bala) that except a resembling character (both facing pre-mature balding) the film itself is entirely different. Maddock Films later released a statement where they said they believed in the originality of the film and will even take on legal action if need be.

A controversy as such is a perfect recipe for memers on Twitter. The memes also targeted the obvious similarity between the two trailers with comical interpretation. Here are a few of them:

Well, for now, all we can do is wait and probably watch both the films, one after the other and then reserve our statements later on.
