Have you taken a peek into Harry Styles Met Gala Look of 2019, Ranveer Singh in Rohit Bal’s creation or Anushka Sharma’s look at the recently concluded Vogue Women of the Year awards? These celebs have taken androgynous fashion to a different level.
What is androgynous fashion?
Androgynous fashion is a style that breaks the gender stereotypes in fashion and dressing. Meaning, girls wearing a tie along with a dress or a suit, boys teaming up a gown or a lehenga with a coat or a shirt. Androgynous fashion has now become the talk of the town.
Androgyny is not something new. It dates back to the 1980s. Japanese fashion stylists Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo are said to have introduced a distinct and definite Japanese style of cross dressing, which broke the monotony of western fashion and fell in the category of androgyny. Calvin Klein’s 90’s campaign featured genderless clothing in the form of boot cut jeans and basic T-shirts. The advertisement promoted effeminate men, emasculate women and removed the stereotypes widening the scope and look and feel of fashion. J W Anderson, Kurt Cobain, Katherine Hepburn, the list goes on, are some of the pioneers of androgynous styling.
In his piece in Highsnobeity, on the androgynous fashion, JW Anderson stated “I never set out to work on the concept of androgyny, I find it quite a dated concept, which is taken.” The London based designer and Loewe creative director has set the fashion world on fire with his unisex aesthetics which aptly avoids any kind of gender-specific clothing.
Celebs leading the trend
During the Met Gala of 2019, Harry Styles showed up on the pink carpet in a sheer top, all lacy and netty – a Gucci creation. Styles had his long time designer Alessandro Michele by his side. A pair of black trousers, a pair of men’s heels, black and mint green nail polish and pearl earrings completed the androgynous look for Styles.
Pushing the fashion boundaries, Billy Porter’s 91st Oscar Red Carpet look in a black tuxedo gown created a ‘lighthouse’ moment in fashion history.
Can Bollywood be far behind? With the likes of Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, known for bold and daring sense of dressing, androgynous fashion has become an in thing for our celebs back home.
Ranveer is known for flaunting the floral prints in style. His selection of clothes are on edge and has been the talk of town ever since. Known for his boldness to carry those long flowing skirts, without looking any less of a stud. He breaks the stereotype every time he dresses up.
Anushka Sharma gave the red carpet dressing a new style sense in the Women of the Year award organised by Vogue India. Dressed in a blue and white check jumpsuit by Gucci, she topped her look with a matching blazer and a black tie. The ear shaped gold ear cuff for earring and a glossy black Christian Louboutin boots killed it for Anushka this time.
Fashion is not about following the latest trends blindly, but it’s an individual choice to standout while being in your own comfort zone. Androgynous fashion allows a person to experiment with their sense of fashion and go beyond the preconceived notions of dressing and fashion.
